Title: I Win

Author: DorsetGirl

Fandom: Doctor Who

Disclaimer: I don’t own these characters or their universe, the BBC do. I’m not making any money out of this.

Word Count: 180

Notes: Gen or slash, depending on your viewpoint

Author’s Note: This is my first Doctor Who fanfic; I normally write Life on Mars. I wanted to do something quite a lot longer than this, but I already have three long fics for Life on Mars eating my brain, so this is it for now.

I Win

The physical pain is extraordinary for such a small wound. Such a neat wound: all the blood staying on the inside, warming my stomach.

I feel myself lowered safely to the floor, held close by strong, trembling arms and I let go.

So tired.

Happy Now?

You catch him before he falls. Hold tight that slim, taut body and lower him safely to the floor.

Ready to give him strength for the next stage. Ready to care for him and watch him forever.

Ready to change your life for him.

I’ve Got You.

You can’t stop the shaken mind breaking open; can’t stop the broken madness slipping away.

You didn’t expect his relief. You didn’t expect his triumph.

You didn’t expect his death.

It Can’t End Like This.

The mental relief is incredible for such a huge wound. Such a messy wound: all the hurt and madness spilling out, cooling my mind at last.

I feel myself falling into blessed silent darkness, as the fading, maddening drums batter the weak, trembling face.

I live at last.

I Win.

I hadn't seen this before. I was snooping around your journal looking for fanfic - hope you don't mind :D

The comparison between the small, physical wound and the larger, emotional wound is lovely, and something I haven't seen before.

Emotional stuff... and now I'm not quite so annoyed with the Master for dying on the Doctor like that.

You definitely win :)

No, of course I don't mind! (although the whole LJ thing - private diary / public forum - does take a bit of getting used to, doesn't it).

I'm really pleased that you liked it. I wasn't very happy with it, I had a lot more going on in my head than I could get on the page, but I think I was very invested in finishing "Real Men Don't" at the time, and I couldn't get into this properly.

This is the only one which isn't posted anywhere else; I did join LJ-Saxon Voters, but weirdly enough simply couldn't work out how to post anything there. Then I forgot all about it, so your comment came as a lovely surprise. Thank you!

I came to this by way of http://community.livejournal.com/thewordsmithery/11168.html#cutid1
and am overjoyed to discover two beautiful fics in one night... I don't know if you did ever write (or will write, perhaps, with The End of Time coming up?) any more DW fic but I shall have to have a look around now to see if you did... Lovely. And so sad.

I guess you've found this drabble - I'm afraid that's all there is atm. Trouble is, although I can see the slash very clearly here, I just don't fancy Ten (or Tennant) in the slightest, which seems to get in the way of writing them.

I'm certainly hoping for something out of The End of Time, though - I think those episodes are going to be pretty intense. I just really hope that the Doctor and the Master spend plenty of time together, one way or another!

And I've just noticed your icon - wow, that is creepy! Where did you get the pic from?

ETA: I lost this comment the first time, and then forgot what I was going to say when I retyped it. Namely that, yes, that fic is excellent, isn't it. Probably one of the first Doctor Who fics I read. Quite an intimidating fandom in some ways!

Oh, if you like this one... check this out for some really high-quality screencaps of the End of Time trailer shown at the end of Waters of Mars on 15th November... http://gallifreybase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23526 you'll probably have to register on gallifrey Base to be able to see them but its a simple process and the results will be well worth it!

They aren't terribly spoilerific in that they don't give much away about the story itself, they just give you a little taster of how it will look... there's a Children in Need clip from the first of the two final specials as well, about three minutes long, which is a little spoilerific. Its the fourth and fifth scenes from the first of the two. You can find it on You Tube by typing Dr Who CiN clip I think....

I have to say that I think John looks awesome in the photos - there's one rather scary one near the bottom of the selection and speculation is rife on the forum over what it could all mean....!!!

Um.. if you don't fancy writing Ten/Master, you could always try pairing Simm!Master with another Doctor you do fancy (if there is one, of course!) - that's the beauty of a wibbly wobbly timey wimey show like DW, lol! Or you could do what I've got as a slightly stalled WiP at the moment - a LoM/DW crossover with The Master landing up in Gene Hunt's world. Only of course everyone there thinks he is Sam Tyler... I've got in mind to write one where Gene Hunt lands up in DW's present day... and meets The Master. Sam Tyler gone very, very bad?!? But its no more than an idea at the moment...

I have to say that I like reading Sam/Gene but I have the same problem with Gene/Phil that you do with Ten/Tennant... I don't really fancy him. So my focus is always on how Gene sees Sam rather than Sam's thoughts on Gene, which can be a little limiting.

I too am hoping for plenty of quality screen time together for the Doctor and the Master in TEOT - that was my only beef with TSOD/LOTTL, that the Doctor spent a good part of it either aged or shrunken! I can understand the reason behind it (RTD wanting the Doctor rendered more or less totally helpless) but I still don't like it too much... He could at least have looked pretty whilst being helpless! Somehow wrinkly!Doctor doesn't float my boat...lol.

Just briefly as OH is wondering what I'm doing here so late - I'll sign up with GB tomorrow (it can be difficult to find the good places to go in Doctor Who).

See icon for who I'd love to see the Simm!Master with!

Jeez, I just went to sign up with Gallifrey Base, but after I read the rules I backed right off! The whole thing seems incredibly unfriendly, not to say draconian. I really don't feel comfortable about joining a forum that feels the need to be quite so hostile in the rules and threatens people with life-time bans and being taken to court in Cook County Illinois for such infractions as posting links to YouTube!

Also, the way it harps on about it being a company, owned by this company and that organisation, isn't quite the kind of thing I really want to be involved in.

It's a pity, because I would quite like to join a Doctor Who comm of some sort, but that one just made me feel quite scared and uncomfortable!

Crikey - I haven't actually ever read the rules I have to confess, even though I know I'm probably meant to!!! I've been a member since it started in July this year, and the previous forum 'Outpost Gallifrey' for a year or two before that and the only difference I've found to other comms is that some of the posters can be a little... pedantic, you could say! You get sniping and stuff as you do most places but I just ignore all that and follow my own moral guidelines for behaviour...do as you would be done by, basically... haven't been banned yet!!! I mainly stick to the 'Infinite Quest' Forum, which is where all the discussion set reports/photos etc for upcoming episodes can be found - it can be spoilerific but thats fine by me. As far as I can tell, what actually tends to happen with ppl who post links to youtube is that the links just get removed - never heard of anyone being taken to court or banned over it! That's not to say it mightn't happen of course but I'm sure ppl who've done so are still posting there so perhaps its just a warning... hmm... it does sound kind of scary, i agree. All I can say is that i don't find it a scary place to be, if that helps!

I know what you mean about DW fandom being somewhat intimidating... I've a few DW fics under my belt now (all of them Master-centric and on my LJ if you feel inclined to take a peek)and comment regularly on GB. But it took a while before I felt brave enough to do either... lol.
