This post started life as a fic rec, so I’ll do that bit first:

Round And Round by [livejournal.com profile] janszy is a wonderful story of what happened to Gene after the final scene of Ashes to Ashes (spoilers, obviously). It’s extremely well written and although I hadn’t seen the author’s work before, it was immediately plain that she was an experienced writer. Do go and read it – it’s masterful, truly.

So that brings me on to the next bit – a comm rec. I know a lot of people have moved on from Life on Mars by now, and by no means everyone stuck it out to the end of Ashes, the early stages of series one being what they were, but if you want to write LOM-fic where it is known whether Sam is mad, in a coma or back in time, or Ashes fic where Sam and Annie are mentioned, there is only one comm – as far as I know – that you can post it to. That comm is [livejournal.com profile] ashes2life.

Anyone who has spent any time at The Railway Arms, [livejournal.com profile] lifein1973 or [livejournal.com profile] a2ashes, will know that what might have been seen as the captive audience for A2A – the LOM fans – were by no means unanimous in their verdict on the new show, and that the Gene/Alex fans who bought into series one of Ashes were in some cases quite visceral in their hatred of Sam.

So if you’d like to discuss Sam without some Galexer telling you that the very mention of his name is insulting to Alex, or you want to talk about Ashes without someone who’s only seen two episodes complaining that it’s badly acted (oh please - 2.07? 3.08?) , do it at [livejournal.com profile] ashes2life!

Also, if you want to write an Ashes fic where Gene/Alex is not inevitable and OTP – one where Gene actually remembers Sam, for example; or a LOM-fic which alludes to the nature of the universe as defined by Ashes to Ashes; or a fic where Alex and Maya meet (oh, somebody please write that!); you might be wanting a comm to post it in, and that comm is [livejournal.com profile] ashes2life.

Set up and maintained by [livejournal.com profile] lozenger8, the comm is there for all the good stuff that would get flamed or deleted at the series-specific comms.

(By the way, in my personal and humble opinion, it’s best not to worry too much about the - to me at least - intimidatingly intellectual flavour of the user-info page. You don't have to write brilliant meta to qualify, although it would be great if someone did. While fanfic is the very last thing mentioned in the community profile, it is definitely allowed and welcome!)

To sum up: if you’ve seen both shows and are happy to buy in, occasionally at least, to the idea that LOM and Ashes both take place in the same universe, [livejournal.com profile] ashes2life is the place to go.

I seem to have missed a couple of weeks; I really need to find a different day or time to post, because early mornings just don’t work any more.

Right, so we missed the whole election thing, but as it’s still rumbling on with the coalition and all, I’m considering it still topical. So, the prompts this week:

Blue Tie, Yellow Tie

Election

A Very Civil Partnership

Post your drabble as a comment to this post, and if you have any ideas for future seasonal prompts, let me know by PM. I may also use the occasional completely random prompt if something occurs to me. For the avoidance of doubt, Clameron or any other RPS is allowed.

The rules are minimal - One hundred words exactly, and be polite when commenting!
You can write any fandom or original fiction, any pairing or none.
You don’t have to write in English if you don’t want to.

Please note that if you do choose to write in another language, I can't promise to comment beyond a simple "Thank You", although I will do my best via Google! A rough translation would be lovely, but is not essential. The translation does not have to be 100 words, nor does it need to be polished or “good English”. Just the gist is fine, to put across the idea.

And as long as you are confident that your response meets one of the prompts, that’s good enough for me.

Hi again, and welcome to the second Seasonal and Topical Drabble Thingy!

I’ve been having a look at the BBC’s On This Day pages for the week Sunday 31st January to Saturday 6th February. A couple of stories stood out for me, and they’re giving us this week’s prompts.

In 1953, on February 5th, sweets finally came off wartime rationing in the United Kingdom.
In 1974, on February 5th, the newspaper heiress Patti Hearst was kidnapped in California, US.
In 1983, on 31st January, seatbelts became compulsory in the UK in most circumstances.

So the prompts this week are:
Sweet(s)
Seatbelts
Kidnapping
Stockholm Syndrome

I hope you can find some inspiration somewhere in there!

I’ll be having a go after the school run, but in the meantime, if you’re interested, have at it!

Fandom: Life on Mars / Ashes to Ashes

Disclaimer: I don’t own these characters or their universe. BBC/Kudos do. I’m not making any money out of this.

Rating: Blue Cortina for a little language and non-graphic sex

Pairing: Past Gene/Jackie; possible past Sam/Gene; NO GENE/ALEX

Word Count:  1800 approx

Summary: Big spoilery thing for A2A 2.04

A/N: I wrote this fic after Ashes to Ashes 2.01, and at the time I put in the notes “Now with new, improved, series two Alex Drake.”  With 2.02 we saw a return to the yearning looks and meaningful silences, but for the purposes of this story I’m sticking with 2.01 Alex rather than 2.02 - Matt and Ash may know how to put together a story arc, but they don’t exactly have form on creating convincing and consistent character arcs across a series. Finally, I do know I haven’t got much of a grip on Alex’s inner voice, but I’ve been wanting to incorporate her enigmatic comment to Gene (“Someone fell in love with you once”) into a fic ever since she said it, and this situation seemed a good vehicle. Posting in a hurry because it will no doubt be jossed in just a few hours!

Rating: White Cortina, Gen

Word Count: 289

A/N: The first time I saw Sam Tyler’s impassioned Hillsborough speech to Pete Bond, it struck me that Sam could have been there; at the very least, as a football fan and a policeman, he would have felt very personally involved. I have often thought of writing about that day from Sam’s point of view, but wasn’t sure - still am not sure - that it’s an appropriate subject for a fic. For that reason I’m not posting it to [info]lifein1973.

Yesterday I read personal memories of the day from Ian Wylie and from James Watson in The Independent, and after that it just had to be written. I make no pretence of being a football fan myself, and I have no idea what I was doing that day, but I do know the tragedy will never, and should never, be forgotten.

‘An Unhappy Man’ is a Life on Mars fic containing some 30,000 words in eight parts. It is a character study of Sam Williams - who is he, and why is he the man he is? The story takes place in the days just before episode 1.01

The story was posted at [info]lifein1973 during the first week of February 2008, in the days leading up to the first broadcast of the follow-up, Ashes to Ashes. All the links below go to the original [info]lifein1973 posts.

Spoiler Warnings:     (1) The fic and the notes below contain major spoilers for Series 1 and 2 of Life on Mars. The story goes to the very heart and central premise of the series, so be warned - if you have ambitions to watch any part of either series unspoiled, DO NOT read any further!

(2) Although my notes below do not contain any spoilers for the fic itself, the comments at the end of this post do.

Rating and Genre:    Gen, White Cortina, ie nothing to exercise anybody’s sensitivities.

Characters:                DCI Sam Williams, DCI Frank Morgan, OC - Pete Martin

Background: After the finale of Life on Mars aired in the UK (on 10th April 2007), I spent some time thinking through what it all meant, then on 16th April 2007 I made this post at TRA (contains spoilers), exploring the idea that only 1973 is real, and that 2006 is just some kind of Utopian vision in Sam’s mind. On 19th May 2007 I started to write Sam Williams’ story, based on the premise that every word Frank Morgan spoke in episode 2.08 was the truth as he knew it.

Warning:         For people who are familiar with my usual stuff, I have to advise you that this is NOT my usual stuff. In particular there is no Sam/Gene interaction, and no sex. (I’d still quite like you to read it though...) I’m sorry to say that Gene doesn’t even appear in this fic, although I think it might become clear that he was in my mind at all times while I was writing this.

Disclaimers:   I don’t own these characters or their universe. BBC/Kudos do.

Lyrics to “Changes”and “Life on Mars”, both from Hunky Dory and copyright David Bowie, are reproduced here without permission but with no intent to profit or harm.

I have been fortunate enough never to have any contact with Children’s Homes. My impressions and descriptions here are therefore all guesswork and Tracy Beaker, and I don’t mean to cause any distress to anyone who has lived in, or worked in, a Children’s Home. In particular, St Barnabas’ Home for Orphaned Children does not exist.

I have invented Frank Morgan’s computerised activity-logging procedures for the purposes of the story, but I make no guarantee that there were such procedures in effect at the time. It just seemed to fit his character.

Acknowledgements: TRA member Jools, who gave me lots of encouragement and plenty of wonderfully positive feedback in the early (and late!) days of writing this.

and [info]lozenger8 who were both kind enough to read and make constructive comments when I lost my way and despaired of ever finishing this.

[info]jayb111 and [info]mikes_grrl both earn huge thanks for detailed and insightful beta’ing.

For most of the eight months I spent writing this fic, it didn’t have a title, then one day the words “Carlos Dominguez - An Unhappy Man” popped into my head. It’s a song by Paul Simon, and it languishes somewhere on a reel-to-reel tape in my loft, but it could have been written for Sam Williams.

Spoiler:            Major spoiler for 1.01 and 2.08   And it probably won’t make sense if you haven’t seen those episodes.

Author’s Note: This is a companion piece to Twice is Enough, taking place on the same day and  leading up to the same moment.

Spoiler:            Major spoiler for 1.01 and 2.08   And it probably won’t make sense if you haven’t seen those episodes.

Summary:       Sam wonders what will happen when that day comes around again.

Author’s Note: Inspired by new member xaritomene’s untitled story, because I too have always wondered what would happen when Gene and Sam got to "that day". Not beta’d; comments and concrit welcomed.

Title: Sam’s Days

Author: DorsetGirl

Fandom: Life on Mars

Disclaimer: I don’t own these characters or their universe. BBC/Kudos do. I’m not making any money out of this.

Rating: White Cortina

Pairing: Nothing explicit, but you know it’ll be there somewhere!

Spoiler: None

Word Count: 410

Summary: There are days, and then there are days. And they’re all different when you’re Sam Tyler.

A/N: This was inspired by, and quite frankly ripped off from

[personal profile] fawsley ’s “Days”. (You may note that I haven’t got round to covering “Nights” yet. It’s on the stocks, but much as I would love to be able to write good hot sex, it just doesn’t seem to write itself for me like other things do, so you’ll have to wait and see on that front.)
