This is my second attempt at Flashslash (a story written from scratch in eight minutes) – still without a prompt. This time I had the first line waiting, which didn’t seem to make that much difference in the end.

Late last night, I discovered the[info]flashslash community, courtesy of[info]halotolerant. I’ve spent far too much time lately editing stories that have been too long in the making, so I thought I’d give it a go. I haven’t posted the results at that community, because I didn’t feel like following prompts, and having read Halo’s awesome Hazel/Bigwig offering it was obvious I couldn’t begin to compete.

I did write this in exactly eight minutes, though, adding only the quote marks after the time was up. It’s unpolished, to say the least - I’ve definitely written better in less time when the muse was on form - but I thought I’d post anyway and to hell with it.

Flashslash First Attempt – Sam/Gene, obviously. Rating PG )

Title: Wine and Candles (6/6 – Complete at last!)

Author: DorsetGirl

Fandom: Life on Mars

Disclaimer: I don’t own these characters or their universe. BBC/Kudos do. I’m not making any money out of this.

Rating: Brown Cortina for sexing

Word Count: 1223

Pairing: Sam/Gene

Spoilers: None.

Summary: Dessert. And about time too.

Author’s Note: I’m not sure if this is the dessert people asked for way back when Wine and Candles was first posted, but it’s the way the boys wanted things done. And Gene is still  talking and thinking even as he finally makes with the sexy. It’s too important for him to just relax and enjoy it.

Previously in this universe: Moving On; Wine and Candles: Part 1; Part 2; Part 3; Part 4; Part 5. I don’t do plot, so it’s not necessary to read previous chapters to get this. But it will add depth to what’s happening if you do.

I’ll be honest and admit this could probably do with a little more polishing, but I’m going on holiday on Saturday and I want it out of my WIP folder by then; it’s been hanging around far too long and I want to get back to Survival. Assuming anyone’s feeling kind enough to comment, I’ll probably see the comments before I go, but I probably won’t be replying until I come back. If anyone’s going to the London meetup on Saturday 18th October – see you there I hope! (PM Wibble at TRA if you’re interested – I think there are a few spaces left).

Title:
Wine and Candles (Part 5 of 6)
Author: DorsetGirl
Fandom: Life on Mars
Disclaimer: I don’t own these characters or their universe. BBC/Kudos do. I’m not making any money out of this.
Rating: This part Green Cortina; part 6 Brown Cortina
Word Count: 1,258
Pairing: Sam/Gene
Spoilers: None.
Summary: Gene’s made his vows and now he wants to get down to business. But guess what, Sam wants to talk a bit more first.
Author’s Note: A long time ago - way back at the beginning of February – I posted parts 1-4 of a series called Wine and Candles, in which Gene cooked Sam dinner and promised to look after him from then on if Sam would accept him. There were calls for dessert in the comments, but Gene simply wouldn’t behave himself and get on with the action, and so things were left slightly in limbo.

However, in May I realised that my Survival series fits beautifully into this universe: I was interested by the idea that events in that series which have been described by various commenters as harrowing, horrific and heartbreaking might happen to a pair who start their life together in circumstances which have been described at best as sweet. It happens in real life, of course, but maybe not so much in fic. Parts 5 and 6 of Wine and Candles were actually written at that time: I felt I needed to complete the beginning of their story before posting Keep Taking the Tablets and Not Just a Cry For Help, but I didn’t want to take the time away from Survival to get them ready for posting. I’m finally doing that now because I’m having difficulty with a part of Survival that references this back-story, and I’m hoping this will get things moving again.

Finally, I have to say that Gene has fought me every inch of the way through this series. I can only apologise for the serious OOC-ness, but to be honest I rather like the way he wrote himself in this story, and it does work very well at setting up the kind of uncompromising and steadfast commitment he’s going to need to get himself and Sam through Survival.

Previously in this universe: Moving On; Wine and Candles: Part 1; Part 2; Part 3; Part 4.
As ever, it’s not necessary to read previous chapters to get what’s happening here, but it will add depth if you do.

The Survival series takes place in a universe where Gene and Sam had been secretly together for about six months, when Sam was kidnapped while on an investigation and held for several weeks. The series covers various points during the long course of his ordeal and recovery, and deals with the physical and emotional consequences for Gene and Sam. As such, the tone of the chapters varies from very bleak indeed (attempted suicide) to verging on fluffy. Ratings and appropriate warnings are given on each individual chapter.

The first piece I wrote for the series,
Fighting to Survive, was originally intended as a one-off, but [livejournal.com profile] duckyone thought it felt like the setup chapter for a longer story, and [livejournal.com profile] saintvic was kind enough to list some of the questions the piece raised in her mind, so over time there have gradually been more chapters, posted as I’ve been lucky enough to get the ideas.

Because of this, the chapters have not necessarily been posted in chronological order, so it is my aim that each piece should be capable of standing alone. They are also not necessarily posted in the order they were started - some chapters fight harder than others!

After I had posted about nine stories in the series, [livejournal.com profile] dakfinv wrote an extremely angsty tale called Not the Dark. Describing Sam being captured and tortured, it seemed tailor-made to be part of the universe. Dak agreed to her story becoming part of Survival, and it now forms the opening chapter of the series.

Finally, in her comment to that very first chapter,
[livejournal.com profile] ladyhawke2 said it reminded her of the first part of my Wine and Candles series, and that probably influenced my later decision to set Survival in the same universe as that series. Stories in the Wine and Survival universe are listed in full in my Masterlist, and events in the Survival series begin a few weeks after First Anniversary.

As the series is not yet finished (although I guarantee we’re heading towards a happy ending!), none of the posts are daisy-chained. All posted stories have links to previously-posted chapters, and as at February 2010 the most recently-posted chapter is Fantasy Lover.

I have also stories in my WIP folder covering later events, notably Sam’s return to work and the trial of his kidnappers.

Links (in chronological order):

Author: DorsetGirl

Fandom: Life on Mars

Disclaimer: I don’t own these characters or their universe. BBC/Kudos do. I’m not making any money out of this.

Rating: White Cortina

Warning: Implied character death

Word Count: 360

Pairing: Sam/Gene

Spoilers: 1.01 and 2.08

Summary: Never parted.

Author’s Note: I normally write Gene and Sam happy ever after. Whether you think this fits with that depends on your definition of “ever after”.  When this idea first hit me, I refused to write it, and ended up watching it instead, in extraordinary detail, crying my eyes out. In the end I decided to write down just the sparse framework without all the details, because it seems to work.

Rating:             Brown Cortina for m/m sex.

Pairing:            Sam/Gene

Spoiler:            None

Summary:       What can you do when the worst wounds are on the inside?

Author’s Note: I started this fic in the background way back in October, and it seems to have completed itself without fuss over the past week or so; I only wish the others would do the same. The talky bits were inspired by Loz’s Aggressive Male Affection and Halotolerant’s Make Do And Mend. I put in the action bits because Totallywow said I hadn’t written any sex for too long, so I hope they’ll do for you, honey. Not beta’ed, sorry, because I’m impatient today, so comments and concrit welcomed.

Oh my  God, guys, I am so embarrassed about this: I wrote a POEM. I’ve never done one before, and this is so NOT what I sat down to write 30 minutes ago. It’s horribly Hallmark, and like I say, I’m embarrassed. But I figure, if it wanted to be written so much that it hit the paper despite my cringing and going “Oh shit this is such rubbish” – well, here it is. Sorry.
